A Whole Latté Love!!

February is officially Romance Month in Brisbane and to kick start courtships, Merlo has released the Top 5 First Date coffees. Coffee dates are safe, non-committal and allow both parties to reconnaissance the other, with the ability to walk away after 30 minutes, or continue the rendezvous to another cup! So take note, the Top 5 Date Coffees include:
  • Mezzo mezzo: for lovers of milk & espresso equally, this 50/50 mix of the two will have you buzzing
  • Cappuccino: Perfect for your icebreaker fact – the name cappuccino means ‘little hood’ in Italian and was derived from the Capuchin monk due to the brown colour of their cloaks & their hood!
  • Short Macchiato: for a lift of caffeine with stain of milk … also doubles as rocket fuel to run if the date isn’t quite panning out as you hoped!
  • Mocha: For those with a sweet-tooth, get in the mood with the combination of life’s 2 great loves: coffee and chocolate
  • Long Black in a Merlo Keepcup: Earn brownie (or “greenie”) points from your date as you display your environmentally-conscious thinking by using a Merlo Keepcup for your long black. Every refill saves you 50c (if couldn’t already wipe the grin off your face). Available for $12 RRP from any Merlo store or online.
Love can be blind, but great coffee is certainly not. Visit any Bar Merlo or Torrefazione for your next coffee date this February.

Romance Blossoms in the Heart of Brisbane

A romantic pre-Valentine’s Day surprise proposal delighted onlookers in Brisbane’s King George Square yesterday. The event was the culmination of a competition held by B105 FM to find a man confident enough to propose in a very public way. That man proved to be Barry-John Freeme (B. J.) who, helped by his sister, arranged for Carla De Vincenzo, his unsuspecting partner, to arrive in the square at 12 noon yesterday, St. Valentine’s Day eve.

Disguised as a busker, B. J. stood behind an astonished Carla as she was first flash mobbed by thirty B105 staff members lip synching to Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’, followed by a marching pipe band and an exuberant cheer squad.

But the surprises were far from over. Announcing a ‘breaking story’, Channel 7’s Brisbane news anchor Bill McDonald appeared on the square’s giant TV screen to introduce a pre-recorded speech by B. J.

The romance factor escalated dramatically as B. J. told Carla just how much he loved her and wanted to share his life with her. Completely amazed, Carla then turned to find that the ‘busker’ had shed his disguise and dropped to one knee in front of the enraptured crowd who cheered loudly when an emotional Carla said "yes".

To mark the occasion, B. J. presented Carla with a $10,000 diamond engagement ring donated by Argyle Jewellers.

The couple’s love story began some eighteen months ago when they met through an online dating site. The chemistry was instant and they very quickly became inseparable. Although they had discussed the possibility of marriage, the bride-to-be confessed that she had absolutely no idea that a proposal was on the horizon.

In a funny twist, Carla said that she had known about the B105 competition and was disappointed when B. J. had apparently shown no interest in entering.

The pair are talking of a wedding in one of the most romantic countries in the world, Italy. Stay tuned as we follow this couple on their amazing journey from engagement to marriage. And don't forget to take a look at the photos from this special event below.
