Rum Balls with freshly brewed Merlo espresso coffee

Saint Nicholas is due South in a matter of weeks, which means it’s time to indulge! The coffee gurus at Merlo have concocted a recipe which combines the Christmas staple Rum Balls with freshly brewed Merlo espresso coffee.

Although they're small in size, they sure do pack a powerful punch! Spiked with rum (and most importantly coffee), one thing is for certain - these little holiday treats are sure to be a great hit with friends and family!

Introducing the Merlo Rum Balls....

What you need:

• 3 cups of vanilla wafers (1 packet)
• 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (walnuts, or pecans)
• 1/3 cup of rum (Bundy of course!)
• 2 shots of merlo fresh espresso
• 3 tablespoons of honey
• 1½ tablespoons of cocoa powder
• Desiccated Coconut (to decorate)

Instructions:

• Place the wafers and nuts in a food processor and blend until a smooth consistency is reached.
• In a large bowl combined processed wafers and nuts, merlo fresh espresso, rum, honey and sifted cocoa powder and mix thoroughly.
• Put desiccated coconut in a Ziplock bag and set aside.
•  It’s now time to roll! Place a small amount of the mixture in your palm and roll it into a ball shape.
• Place the ball into the Ziplock bag and seal. Shake bag until the ball is thoroughly coated.

Merlo Showcases World’s Rarest Bean for December

Considered the Rolls Royce of coffee, Kopi Luwak is the rarest and most fabled coffee in the world, and during December, Merlo Coffee will showcase this most extravagant cup of Joe as part of the popular Bean of the Month initiative.

According to the coffee guru’s at Merlo, Kopi Luwak – more commonly known as cat poo coffee made from the droppings of the Asian feline breed, Palm Civet – is a fine blend even it its origins, well, stink. Merlo has saved the most expensive - and excremental – single origin coffee for last!

A tin of the prestigious Kopi Luwak from Sumatra, is priced from $65.00 for 125g and is roasted in small amounts to preserve its freshness with larger amounts being made to order, making it a truly thoughtful gift for absolute coffee connoisseurs or for those that have everything.

Coffee experimenters and enthusiasts can also purchase a takeaway coffee (Regular $10; Large $15), or sit down instore at any Barmerlo or at the Southport and Springfield Torrefaziones (Espresso $7; Standard $10; Double Strength & Mug $15) to get the full experience.

Poured as a short black, Kopi Luwak has a bouquet of caramel and cinnamon. On the palate the arabica bean has a clean, smooth flavour and tastes of cacao, caramel and a hint of berries and lingers for a long time. As a flat white, the coffee aroma has almost disappeared, but the resulting taste is clean and smooth on the palate.

Chief Espresso Officer, Dean Merlo said being able to showcase Kopi Luwak as the December Bean of the Month was an absolute coup for South East Queensland.

“This is the holy grail of coffees. Everyone at Merlo is so excited at having the beans here, roasting them ourselves and indulging. We can’t wait for our customers to experience this bean,” he said.

x&y Bar Pays Tribute to Powderfinger

Brisbane’s x&y bar – the little bar in Ann Street which has recently taken out Best Music Offering and Nightclub of the Year at the Australian Bartender Magazine’s Australian Bar Awards – is honouring the final farewell concerts of iconic rock band Powderfinger THIS WEEKEND with four “fingertails” (cocktails) and no apologies!

The award-winning, but anti-establishment bar has announced the four “fingertails” to be Odyssey # 5, Belter, My/Your Happiness and Like A Dog and a percentage of all ‘fingertails’ sold will be donated to Youngcare.

x&y bar co-owner Pete Eldon said the four drinks would feature Queensland inspired mixers that parallel Powderfinger – raw, gritty, honest and classic. In addition, anyone showing a Powderfinger concert ticket will get express entry at x&y bar – “we are giving Powderfinger fans the chance to give us the finger at the door, and the finger to the queue too!” he said.

“Powderfinger is the poster child for Queensland’s music scene, they grew up and got their musical inspiration from this city and this state, and they make no apologies for who they are, the music they play and where they play it. We respect that and this weekend it’s our chance – as a venue which nurtures new and emerging musical talent – to pay tribute to one of the great rocks bands of our generation. Of course there’s an open welcome to all the ‘Finger boys to come in and make themselves at home at any time,” he said.

“The Fortitude Valley Walk of Fame, which features the boys among other musical greats, made us really think about how we can honour this end of an era………. It makes us excited about what we can do when Regurgitator calls it a day!!!”.

The four “Fingertails” will be available at x&y bar this Friday and Saturday nights, with Powderfinger tickets holders getting express entry….. and a little something special when they order a Fingertail!!!

After recently being crowned Australia’s Best Music Offering at the prestigious Australian Bartender Magazine’s Australian Bar Awards, Brisbane’s independently owned bar x&y in Ann Street, Fortitude Valley has also grabbed another national nod – taking out a Highly Commended for Nightclub of the Year at last night’s ALIA Awards, a close second to the famous Hugo’s of Sydney. Home to emerging music, two boutique bars, a family of superb bar staff and an old school attitude of all welcome, x&y bar has just turned one.
